All of the advice below is good and accurate

I had to fiddle around to get the pistom back into the brake caliper - to do this I removed the top of the brake fluid reservoir, and then very very very cautiously put some pressure on the brake lever - this seemed to release the pressure holding the piston forward - then with it pushed fully back I was able to insert my initially to thick but now just the correct size of brake pads.

As to the oil leak - they are relatively in-expensive - and if put in with lots of sealant - they will hold
